Huff 'N' Puff
Published in Hardcover by Eager Minds Press (November, 2001)
Average review score:

HUFF AND PUFF - GREAT BOOK!I think that this book is a great childrens book. The author takes a story we all know to well, The Three Little Pigs and makes it have a new story line. The Three Little Pigs now have children of their own and how they try to out smart the wolf, just like their fathers. What a novel idea. Not to many authors would think of taking a bedtime story and making it into something more, especially a second generation. I think any child would like this book because it has a new story line to it. All children are use to hearing and reading the same old bedtime stories that this would definietly be something new and different for them to hear or read. I recommend this book to anyone who has children.

I'll Stand By You - The Letters of Sylvia Townsend
Published in Paperback by Trafalgar Square (01 October, 1998)
Average review score:

A look behind the scenesI fell into Warner's writing by whim -- a bookclub had a quartet of her novels on sale. Those 4 stories delighted me with their cheerful twists on reality -- devil worship as a cure for housewife's blues, f'r instance -- but one story in particular, Summer Will Show, was harrowing by being too real, too vivid, and that's a love story of two women against a backdrop of war. Having since then read Warner's diaries and letters, and Ackland's "For Sylvia" I believe that the acuteness of the insight in this story stemmed from the deep and cognizant love she had with Ackland. I never cease to recommend Warner's writing to people; I've come to love her diaries and letters more than her stories, for their charm and intelligence and the way in which she can make the most dreary commonplace items and events vivid with humor or threat or beauty. Still, this collection of letters, in which her writing scintillates as usual, bothered me in its subject matter. The collection is presented as a portrait of their relationship (rather than as a literary objet) and you can't help but be moved by the emotions of the writers in these extremely intimate letters, often written when they were unable to speak what needed to be said. The storms of the relationship made me queasy, especially since they seemed so uneven and, pardon the 90's jargon, unhealthy. Bloomsbury mores were a universe unto themselves, but it's still hard to read letter after letter from Ackland proclaiming that her love is the most ardent in the world, but she must be excused so she can go have sex with this American chick for a few more weeks. Warner moves out -- of her own home -- so that the two can have a month together, and in fact picks her own embroidered initials out of the table linen so as not to give offense. It's a bit much. So my overall take on it is that if you can tolerate the emotional context, the language of the letters, esp. Warner's, is magnificent. If you enjoy this book, her diaries and letters to others are even better. All have been edited quite well, with respect for the author and scholarship in general.

Information Retrieval Today
Published in Paperback by Info Resources Press (October, 1993)
Average review score:

It's okayI used this book for a graduate information science course. The book helped me to understand how to form online search strategies and evaluate the results of those searches. I also learned how NOT to form searches. However, the vocabulary used was more complex than it needed to be. The diagrams used to show the flow of information from person to person in an institution, plus the flow of information from print and online resources were hard to follow and understand sometimes. The authors did a good job of predicting trends in the field of library and information science for the end of the 1990s. Many of the predictions have come to pass even as I write this today. I understand that the book was published in 1993. But since technology changes so rapidly and people in the industry are always searching for something "faster, cheaper, better," I think the book requires an update with clearer diagrams, simpler language, and a continued analysis of how trends in the information technology industry afffect the search for that information.

John W. Schaum Piano Course: A-The Red Book: Leading to Mastery of the Instrument
Published in Paperback by Warner Brothers Publications (July, 2000)
Average review score:

Great for Piano Beginners! The John W. Schaum Piano series is an excellent way to introduce children to the piano. Geared to the early grade school level, A-The Red Book is a follow-up to Pre-A-The Green Book. All the piano books in this series feature colorful illustrations, easy-to-read notes, and simple hand positions. The book progresses from very simple melodies at the start to more complex "melody and chord" songs at the end. Children love to sing along as they play the notes. I have found this to be a great way to for younger kids to learn to read music and begin their study of the piano.

Kathryn Kuhlman: The Woman Behind the Miracles
Published in Paperback by Servant Publications (July, 1993)
Average review score:

A Second BiographyWhile Jamie Buckingham's 'Daughter of Destiny' remains the definitive biography of Miss Kuhlman, this is a valuable collection of interviews and insights that help to better explain Miss Kuhlman's personality and history. Her connection to Aimee Semple McPherson is not as accidental as once thought and her devastating divorce in the 1940's and the collapse of her early success in Colorado was more bitter and scar-filled than even Buckingham (with his brutal honesty) records. Despite claims to the contrary, Warner concludes, like Buckingham, that Miss Kuhlman, not unlike Aimee Semple McPherson, was unique without a direct successor.

Kids Outdoor Parties: Hundreds of Fun Things to Do Outdoors for Kids 2 to 12
Published in Paperback by Meadowbrook (June, 1999)
Average review score:

Kids' Outdoor PartiesThe book has lots of great ideas for 35 themed parties. Each party includes ideas for invitations, costumes, decorations, food, games and other activities, favors and a theme-related cake. The games, and activities (mostly crafts) have easy to follow directions and are fun and creative. Costume ideas range from a suggestion they come in casual clothes to an actual costume wear to the party or one you provide.
For most parties there are a range of options that fit a variety of price ranges. You could splurge on a high cost favor idea and save on a less expensive invitation idea. Each party suggests an age range for which it is appropriate and most are for the upper end, say 7-12.
